TIPS FOR BUYING A GOOD CAR BATTERY

Car batteries, like all things, will have their power wear out eventually. However, there are certain key things you need to consider when buying a car battery that will help you make the best purchase possible for your car and make the most out of it.

  • PRICE

As much as it is tempting to buy the most affordable car battery possible, sometimes it will end up costing you more in the long run. Yes, you might be saving maybe $50-$100 buying a more affordable battery compared to a $300-$400 one, but in reality, these batteries have shorter battery life spans that will end up making you buy one every 1-2 years or so compared to a slightly more expensive one that will last you years, especially if you take good care of your car batteries. Research a bit more and save up to purchase a battery that will last you a bit longer, making you save up more money (and avoid the hassle!) in the long run.

  •  SIZE

Car batteries do not have a universal size, “one-size-fits-all” kind of situation. Look for a car battery that fits the terminal locations. If the terminals are in the wrong spot then it’s either the car cables wouldn’t be able to reach the battery or they might not be snug enough to fit.

  • MANUFACTURE DATE

Pick the newest car battery, if possible -- or take note of the car battery’s manufacturing date. As a practical tip, buy car batteries that are less than six months old from when they were manufactured.

Another tip is to check a 2-character alphanumeric code on the battery. The first character is a letter from A-L, which represents the 12 months of the year (A is January, B is February and so forth) while the 2nd character is a number from 0 to 9 (0 is 2010, 1 is 2011 and so forth).

  • WARRANTY

Choose a car battery with a long free-replacement period. Car battery manufacturers divide their warranties into the free-replacement period and the prorated period. Prorated period is the partial reimbursement of the customer after a certain amount of years if the free-replacement period has already lapsed.

  • POWER REQUIREMENT

For those who live in colder temperatures, this should be very important: CCA (cold cranking amps) is a measurement of the ability of the battery to start a car at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, CA (cranking amps) is the energy needed to start a vehicle at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • RESERVE CAPACITY

Reserve capacity is to indicate how long the battery can continue to run and operate if the alternator, stator and rotor fails. It is the number of minutes a 12-volt battery can provide a current of 25amps at 80 degrees Fahrenheit without falling below minimum voltage. It is also a measure of how long someone can accidentally leave lights on (battery discharging) and still won’t need a jump-start.

These are just some of the basic tips when choosing a good car battery. Onlinecarstereo.com, aside from being your one-stop shop with car audio/video and accessories, is also an XS Power Authorized Dealer! XS Power specializes in car racing and competition car audio, so you are assured that you’ll be getting a high-performing car battery. THE EVOLUTION OF BACKUP CAMERAS

Safety features for cars have evolved exponentially in the past decade or so. We have smart safety features like forward collision warnings and automatic emergency brakes to warn us and immediately halt the vehicle when it senses something (or someone!) that it might bump into. However, we have the most basic type of safety feature that all vehicles have nowadays -- and it is the backup camera.

The backup camera’s design is very distinct from other cameras because it shows a mirrored image that is flipped horizontally. This makes the orientation consistent with the vehicle’s mirrors. Backup cameras usually are pointed at a downward angle as opposed to straight back to view obstacles on the ground. It is also typically wired to sense when the vehicle transmission is set to reverse. It also typically shows grid guidelines or lines to aid the driver in parking.

The first vehicle that had a backup camera installed was a 1956 Buick Centurion Dream car and was presented at a General Motors Motorama in January 1956. A television camera was mounted at the back of the vehicle and the images it recorded were sent to a screen in the dashboard and replaced its rear-view mirror.

The first production vehicle to incorporate a backup camera was a 1991 Toyota Soarer Limited that was only available in Japan. It used a color EMV screen with a rear-spoiler-mounted CCD camera.

In April 2000, at the 2000 New York International Auto Show, Nissan’s Infiniti luxury division introduced the RearView Monitor on a 2002 Q45 flagship sedan. They introduced colored onscreen guidelines that transmitted a mirrored image on an in-dash LCD screen. In 2002, the Nissan Primera introduced this backup camera system to territories outside North America and Japan.

Here in the United States, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that all vehicles sold in the United States that were built from May 2018 onwards are required to include backup cameras. The NHTSA conducted a research and they found out that rearview cameras should be able to prevent around 65 deaths a year once this mandate was implemented. Studies also have shown that backup cameras can reduce the driver’s blind spot by around 90% and it definitely is a big help preventing collisions or crashes.

We have an ongoing promo right now at onlinecarstereo.com where you get a free Boss Elite ELPC40B backup camera when you purchase an in-dash receiver. Isn’t that neat? You get to upgrade your in-dash receiver AND upgrade your backup camera as well! Subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss out on many more of our promotions this Cyber Monday!

WHAT ARE EQUALIZERS?

When we do upgrades, we audio geeks still tend to configure our sound to the best hertz and decibel we can get. Sometimes, even though we've upgraded to the best speakers or subwoofers, there is still room for small adjustments to achieve that perfect sound. This is where equalizers come in.

Equalizers are devices that lets you tweak your sound frequencies in different spectrum. When done right, it can improve your car sound and eliminate unwanted frequencies and customize your music. Equalizers come in different forms. It can be built in your head unit or receiver; or it can come as a separate in dash unit which can be classified as graphic, parametric or digital.

Graphic equalizers are the most common and can be used easily. It is makes use of sliders that represents the shape of the frequency you are trying to achieve hence the name. The sliders are used to cut or boost certain parts of the sound frequency whichever you desire.

Parametric equalizers is a little more complex than the graphic. It will allow you to adjust the width and center point of any frequency band. A parametric equalizer will also allow for Q adjustment (the quality of the curve of the band passed by the filter) of a frequency.

Digital equalizers offer the best of both worlds. From the graphical equalizer, it takes the ability of a user to see the adjustments made on the frequency. From parametric equalizers, it takes the ability to control the actual parameters of sound. The values are displayed on a screen digitally.

Onlinecarstereo offers various equalizers for your needs. Here are some of the best sellers:
